Straw Hat Pirates

If you are no longer a kid and don’t really watch animated series, you may never have heard of the “Straw Hat Pirates” and will certainly have no clue about them. If, however, you are a kid, then you know every member of the “Straw Hat Pirates” – by name. So who are these “pirates?”

Straw Hat Pirates Straw Hat Pirates are part of an animated television series called One Piece in which the star character has the unusual name of Monkey D. Luffy. Created by a Japanese artist whose name is Eiichiro Oda, Luffy and his band of young and not-so-young pirates spend each week in their animated series searching for One Piece. If they find it, than Monkey D. Luffy will be able to realize his life’s dream and become the “King of the Pirates.”

That’s the theme and Luffy and all of the supporting characters enjoy exciting – and sometimes dangerous – adventures every week when they meet up with other pirates … bounty hunters … criminal revolutionaries … secret agents … and the mighty soldiers of the World Government.

It may sound like the theme from an old James Bond movie, but Luffy and the gang are animated characters who have been created to entertain fan base of very young people. As you might expect, there are lots of characters around to provide support to Monkey D. Luffy and to keep the show always fresh and interesting.

There is Roronoa Zoro … a buccaneer-type character who wields three swords at one time, all of which are used to fight against “bad guys.” Known as “Pirate Hunter Zoro,” his goal is to defeat Mihawk in battle and become the “world’s greatest swordsman.”

There is Nami. She is only 18 years old … is a master pickpocket … and can detect the slightest changes in weather instantly. She has a single dream: to draw a complete map of the world – by hand.

Usopp is just seventeen years old and is a liar … an inventor … a skilled painter … and a sculptor. He is also skilled in the use of a single weapon – the slingshot.

19 year old Sanji is the crew chief for the “Straw Hat Pirates … a gourmet cook … and a Martial Artist, as well. He has a need to eat all of the time and he is honorable: he will never harm a female. And then there is Tony Tony Chopper. Also known as “Cotton Candy Lover,” he is a blue-nosed reindeer who devoured devil fruit and developed “human properties and characteristics.”

Nico Robin is a 28 year old archaeologist known as “Dream Child” while Franky is a 34 year old cyborg and Brook, known as “Dead Bones Brook,” is an 88 year old musician and the oldest of all of the “Straw Hat Pirates.”

There are many other supporting characters, but you probably get the idea. Luffy and his band of engaging characters have captured the imagination of young people everywhere. That’s not likely to change any time soon.
